How to Write a Five Paragraph Essay

Recently in one of my classes, I had to write a five paragraph essay and I realized how much other people struggle with writing one. I admit that at first it can be tricky but then I got the hang of it. Here are the steps to getting ready for an essay.

1. Collect any necessary rubrics and directions for your assignment.

Highlight the main/important parts in the rubric.

2. Do all of the research: find .org and .edu websites. Put all of your research notes in a document and organize by topics.

3. Make an outline: Use this format

[insert your Topic] Essay

First Paragraph: opening

Intro:

Background Information:

Thesis:

Second Paragraph: [1st thesis point]

Opening sentence:

Evidence One:

Back-up:

Evidence Two:

Back-up:

Evidence Three:

Back-up:

Closing sentence:

Third Paragraph [2nd thesis point]

Opening sentence:

Evidence one:

Back-up:

Evidence two:

Back-up:

Evidence three:

Back-up:

Closing sentence:

Fourth paragraph [3rd thesis point]:

Opening sentence:

Evidence one:

Back-up:

Evidence two:

Back-up:

Evidence three:

Back-up:

Closing sentence:

Fifth paragraph: closing

Intro:

Recap:

Thesis (but in different words than in paragraph one):

Copy and paste this format  into your document and fill it in using all of your research.

4. Copy your entire outline that you just created and paste it into another document. Delete all of the words that I had; intro, back-up, evidence one, etc.

5. Edit it more until you have it exactly the way you want it.

6. Make sure you have indented your paragraphs, double-spaced your writing, and have it in the correct font and size your teacher wants it in.

Good luck on your essay!!
